As you begin the process of entering into counseling services, it is important to determine if you will be accessing your mental health insurance benefits. There are both advantages and disadvantages of using mental health insurance benefits.
Some clients prefer not to use their benefits for psychotherapy in order to keep personal issues completely private and avoid generating evidence of a mental health issue. In order to qualify for benefits, insurance companies require the application of a mental health diagnosis by the provider for the client. Additional information such as treatment plans, progress reports and prognosis may also be required throughout the course of therapy. This information is often filed, computerized and forwarded by the insurance company to the Medical Information Bureau (MIB), which is a medical information data bank. This information then becomes available to other insurance companies. For those clients concerned about these issues, they may opt to pay for sessions themselves.
Other clients choose instead to utilize their mental health insurance benefits. Be aware that I am contracted with a limited number of insurance companies/managed care providers. Please contact your insurance company prior to scheduling an appointment to determine if I am an in-network provider. If so, I will utilize your insurance benefits for services as approved by your insurance company. Be aware that insurance companies may determine to limit the number of sessions authorized and this may have direct bearing on the progress of therapy. If I am determined to be an out-of network provider, I will provide you with the necessary information regarding your care in order for you to submit your own claim directly to your insurance company, should you desire to do so.
